The Story of Kita the Akita

It was a quiet Tuesday morning in September. Our certified animal health care technician observed Kita the Akita retching in her cage. Fearing a serious stomach condition of large breed dogs, the technician immediately notified the doctor on duty.

The doctor performed a physical exam and was concerned that Kita could be suffering from gastric dilatation-volvulus, an idiopathic condition in which the stomach fills with gas and then twists. Because of the effect this has on the body's circulation, within hours the stomach can become necrotic and the spleen can become damaged as well. If left untreated, a dog can die within hours.

The staff veterinarian and team of technicians were able to instantly X-ray the dog, confirming the diagnosis. Within one hour of discovering Kita sick in her cage, the staff was able to begin treatment for her problem.

Kita underwent emergency surgery with all the necessary supportive care. Three days later, she was discharged from the hospital- and boarding- to her grateful owners!
